Announcing the first-ever DarkSky DC “Bad Lighting” Photo Contest!
DarkSky DC is excited to announce our first-ever DarkSky DC Bad Lighting Photo Contest, a community-wide search for the best examples of bad outdoor lighting in Washington, DC.
From glaring floodlights to overly bright buildings and poorly shielded fixtures, we’re inviting residents, visitors, and photography enthusiasts to help document lighting problems that impact our neighborhoods, wildlife, energy use, and night skies. Through this contest, we hope to raise awareness about light pollution and inspire conversations about better outdoor lighting across the District.
Participants may submit up to two photographs showing examples of problem lighting in DC, with cash prizes awarded to top entries. Winning and images may also be featured in DarkSky DC educational and advocacy materials to help promote smarter lighting solutions throughout the city.
We encourage everyone to start looking around their neighborhoods and favorite DC locations for examples of lighting that could be improved. Whether you are an amateur photographer, a concerned resident, or simply someone who cares about the beauty of the night sky, we invite you to participate. Together, we can help make Washington, DC a healthier, more beautiful, and more night-sky-friendly city.
Submissions are due by June 1, 2026. Please see the full contest rules and submission details on our website, through the link below.
